You may have or may have not heard of this remedy / health healer Golden Milk AKA Turmeric Milk.  It’s become quite popular in recent years and as more and more studies are published on turmeric and its health benefits.  There are more ways that are being introduced in which this little superfood is utilized.

For one, turmeric can be found in many forms, powder, pill, paste, turmeric root (which looks very much like ginger root) and etc.  Depending on how you want to use it there can be a variety of ways in which you can cook this little wonder or add to your foods that you already eat!  I like to use this is as a spice and just add as I see need depending on what I’m cooking so I just keep a turmeric seasoning in the season cabinet next to the stove – then I never forget to add it.

Now, Turmeric has so many benefits it’s probably helpful to see them all laid out before you.  Well that’s at least how I like to see it.  Let me know what I’m looking at then I’ll give you my assessment and decide how to proceed – that’s my approach.  Well if you’re like me, you’re in luck!  There have been numerous studies published and a very long list of benefits subsequently are the result of these studies.  I’ve went to various resources and have found the proven benefits and listed a few below:

1.)    Cold and cough remedy.  Due to its antiviral and antibacterial properties. It gives instant relief to a sore throat, cough and cold

2.)    Makes the skin GLOW! Having turmeric milk regularly can purify and nourish the blood and result in healthy and glowing skin. Due to its anti-bacterial and antiseptic properties it is excellent for skin diseases like eczema, acne, skin cancers etc. and helps in preventing premature aging- ummmmmmm yes please!

How you ask? The antioxidant properties of turmeric milk fight the free radicals that are known to damage our skin, leading to loss of elasticity. With its strong antioxidant activity it compared to vitamin C, E and Beta-carotene.

3.)    It is an excellent Blood Purifier.

What does that mean? Toxins in the blood are the underlying causes of many abnormal skin conditions and other diseases. Turmeric helps the elimination of blood impurities by improving the function of the liver.

4.)    It’s a great Sleep Aid - Drinking warm milk with turmeric at bed time increases serotonin levels in the brain, which helps with relaxation, calm mood and sleepiness.

5.)    Improves Reproductive Health of women.  Woo hoo tell me more!  Turmeric regulates menstrual cycles, decreases intensity and pain of periods, and decreases uterine tumors.

6.)    It has Anti-Cancer properties.  What?  Wait….I need this stuff!  The curcumin in turmeric has been shown to kill cancer cells and has been found to be effective against breast, prostate, skin, colon and lung cancer.  Many cancerous growths go undetected and untreated in the initial stages, drinking turmeric milk regularly may help prevent malignant growths as well as stop their progress in the early stages.  Now I don’t know about you but I have cancer in my family so this to me is a HUGE benefit!

7.)    Reduce pain and inflammation.  This is generally regarded as a source of many health problems. Turmeric is an excellent anti-inflammatory spice, easing conditions such as arthritis, back pain etc.

Hopefully these are enough reasons as to why Golden Milk is the truly the healing milk and it tastes great, at least this recipe doesJ   Still skeptical, try it yourself!

Ingredients:

·        1 ½ cups coconut milk or almond milk

·        1/2 tsp turmeric powder (you can find in seasoning section at your local grocery)

·        1 tsp coconut oil

·        1 tbsp natural sweetener like Agave, honey or maple syrup.  If you want to increase this you certainly can but this is what I prefer.

·        ¼ tsp cinnamon (optional)

Start by pouring milk into saucepan on a stovetop and have heat at medium high.  Add Turmeric powder, coconut oil and bring to a boil.  Remove from heat, pour into cup and add sweetener and cinnamon.  Or you can use the cinnamon as a topper.  Enjoy!
