Slimming Summer Smoothie
There are so many reasons why I love smoothies but being that they are on-the-go is one of the huge reasons since my life is quite literally on-the-go like most of you I’m sure!
Another reason I love smoothies is you can pack a lot of nutritional punch into one drink! I find it so convenient to just throw everything but the kitchen sink into a blender and know I’m fueling my body with healthy fats, greens, protein and super foods. And its a great way to start the day!
Some baselines for smoothies that I like to always incorporate are the following:
Greens: the more the merrier here! My favorites for smoothies are spinach, kale, swiss chard and collards. A great way to pack in a lot of punch in one drink! So 2-3 handfuls is great!
Healthy Fats: I love nut butters of all kinds - cashew, peanut, almond, sunflower, all of it! Every kind, I’m a fan! I love the texture, I love how it keeps me satisfied and I love how it adds so much richness to the flavor!
Protein: I only use plant protein that is clean, non-GMO and organic. Always super clean. The less amount of ingredients the better! I also look for sugar content and the type of sugar. If there is sugar, Id rather it be real, not Splenda (Sucralose), Stevia, Xylitol, and etc. even I try to stay away from and go more for coconut sugar if possible.
Some of my favorite protein powders are: OWYN, Garden of Life, Orgain and Plant Fusion. - unflavored.
Fruits: I love to add in frozen blueberries or strawberries into my smoothies. However, the fruit content is kept to about 1/4 of the blended smoothie to keep the sugar content lower. I also try to stay with low glycemic fruits like berries to keep the total sugar intake low. Keeping these frozen also add to the the thick and creamy texture.
Super Foods: Some of my favorites are cacao for added crunch and antioxidants, spirulina for antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties, maca for energy and stamina, and more! Getting creative in this area depending on what I need that day!
So that’s my list of must have’s to create the perfect smoothie!
Now, let’s get into the ingredients for my go-to smoothie!
Ingredients:
2 handfuls spinach
1 tbsp nut butter - usually almond or peanut butter
1 tbsp cacao nibs
1 tsp maca powder (optional)
3 -4 ice cubes
1 scoop Owyn Plant Protein - Vanilla
1 cup flax milk - My Fav is Good Karma!
That’s it! Blend and enjoy! Add your favorite toppings! I love hemp seeds and cacao for added crunch!
